Our training aim is to provide the environment, knolwedge and skills for people to enjoy training from childhood through to old age as is the traditional Okinawan way.
From teaching children who are just beginning to develope their co-ordination and understanding, to adults who are hoping to regain or improve fitness, traditional karate has much to offer all ages.
The structured syllabus of Sessen Ryu with it's 9 belts up to and including Blackbelt means that there is a broad range of techniques to perfect.

Typically a class will start with light cardio-vascular warm-up followed by stretching. As karate covers a broad spectrum of techniques and skills we weekly build on different skills including improving personal stamina, strength and flexibility, acquiring basic techniques such as blocks, strikes, kicks and stances, learning self defence along with sparring and grappling. Also a lot of traditional training is designed to instill an inner strength and to help practitioners overcome adversity. This can be achieved in class not necessarily merely through physical combat but chiefly through self improvement attained by dogged determination and stoicism.

Students learn simple defensive routines as beginners which are taught in the form of pre-arranged attack and defence drills. As proficiency builds so does the skill and physical application of the drill.

There are many training techniques that are unique to martial arts and karate. Pictured is one of the traditional weights (chishi) used for strength training. Part of the appeal of karate (and for that matter of kobudo) is the ability to adapt everyday objects to improve/retain our fitness and ability and to defend ourselves.

It's great to train in your own usual dojo with your own instructor who you will be familiar and comfortable with. However you can be sure that any good instructor will on occasion attend seminars and courses to extend their knowledge. Here at Sessen Ryu we endeavour to hold regular seminars for all grades with world renowned guest instructors. In this respect Sessen Ryu students are very fortunate. Often it is the case that students have to travel to other countries to train with notable martial artist. We endeavour to bring leading martial artists to Essex which benefits not only Sessen Ryu students but martial artist from across Britain. Dont be left out - See our Seminars page on this site for further details - you wont be disappointed

Martial artists who train seriously realise that rather than being the end of the path - achieving your Blackbelt just marks the beginning of our serious training. Too often in the West a Black Belt is seen as the ultimate goal. In the Orient it is seen as merely a beginning!
We have a large group of black belts who continue training with a syllabus which takes them up to 5th Dan. As is traditional we believe that wisdom and knowledge are acquired through experience over a course of years. With Sessen Ryu Blackbelts that expereince comes with regular training, acquiring new knowledge and wearing their belt (and living up to its expectations in the dojo) on a weekly basis!

Beginners are offered a 3 month training package which will take them to their first grade and their first step on the path to blackbelt.
All training is supported by a structured syllabus.
Beginners or those returning to martial arts will have their fitness and wellbeing monitored throughout their training so that they can progress at a manageable rate

We undertand that for many reasons students often have to take a break in their martial arts studies, whether it be for university, travel, work or personal reasons. Over the years we have welcomed back many such students who have gone on to resume their training and become active, valued members of our Association often bringing their new families with them. It is always a pleasure for us to hear from old students. Those that resume training feel like they never left. If you're thinking of resuming your martial arts studies contact us or just turn up at the dojo - you'll be suprised how many old friends you'll see.
